Being Forced to Return to the Office Made Me Stop Caring About Arriving on Time Most mornings
I leave the house at the same time I'm supposed to be sitting at my desk. That usually means I arrive at the office 15 to 25 minutes late, and I've been doing this for almost two years.

Before that, I worked from home for about four years, starting during CO ID. I slept better, got more done, and still had enough energy after work to live my life. Without exaggeration, it was the best period of my professional life.

Going back to the office full-time ruined that balance. Between the commute, the endless chitchat, pointless office events, and sitting in video calls I could have joined from home, I've become disengaged and irritated most days.

I asked about remote work more than once. The short answer was that it was only available to managers, and even they only get one designated day each week to work from home. Once that became clear, I stopped making an effort to arrive on time.

No one has confronted me about it. Maybe they haven't noticed, or maybe they know it would be ridiculous to object, especially since my manager regularly comes in after 9, and sometimes close to 10, without offering any explanation.

If they allowed me to work from home, they would have a more focused and dependable employee. Instead, they have an employee who arrives late and no longer feels guilty about it.

I've simply stopped caring. Has anyone else reached this point after being forced to return to the office?

Harbinger_Kyleran If you are on salary they can't really demand a rigid start/stop time as long as you are getting your work done however long you work. I know the reality doesn't always align like this but perhaps your employer is satisfied with this arrangement, if so, great.

TurbulentAerie3785 My boss comes in later than all of us, waves as he walks by, sits on the opposite side of the building, doesn't speak to us the rest of the day, then leaves without saying goodbye. There's literally no reason to be early or stick around all day.

jengafat You dont leave for work until you are already supposed to be at work, so you normally get there 15 minutes late... and youre complaining about the commute? Lol... some people are so entitled its crazy. Go find a new job

OkieKing I'm usually 30 minutes late. As long as you have your phone available for client calls, I've found that no one cares too much. And there's rarely anything so pressing that I need to be there before 9 but I don't want to get a reputation for being an hour late every day.

VinylHighway I was enticed away from my solid job by a bank that was being acquired. It was 2 hours EACH WAY to the office due to my lack of car. I'd leave at 4 everyday to get home by 6 vs. 7. Nobody ever said a word. I was of course laid off 1 year to the day with most of the team.

Xandrylo The thing is, Bob, it's not that I'm lazy, it's that I just don't care.

Adventurous_Trust286 I do the same thing. I don't care, they are forcing us to go back then coming in late is better than nothing g

fwilsonator Weird to think that not that many years ago working from the office was the norm. But as long as you are ok if your passive resistance affects your job promotion or raise ability. Not saying it will, but it could.
